Lydian Exercise

Shown below are the 5 main finger pattern forms that are used in the Lydian Scales.  Please refer to Lydian scale diagram for finger sequences on each Lydian Form model used in this exercise.

What this exercise does is demonstrate how scale keys change simply by playing the different fingering forms and placing each form on the keys “starting” or “root” note.  In this exercise all pattern models state the finger sequence form number, the starting fret position number, and root pattern.  Also shown in the root notes are numbers indicating the finger used at that fret location.

Bass players remember the strings representing 1 and 2 in these diagrams are played on your string 1 and 2 also, but 9 frets up the neck from the position as stated in the TAB for that string.  For exercise models #4 and #5  string 2 fret 2 on this diagram for you represents string 2 fret 11 (9+fret 2).

To begin…starting on model #1…using the root keys (shown in white with finger number in each form as a starting location).  Observe and follow the sequence as shown on the TAB notation, we flow into model #2, #3, #4, #5 to #6 and then return to model #1.  Do not stop…keep repeating the sequences with a continuous flow.  Keep steady beat and pick the notes clean (remember muting!!)  If and an error is made, do not stop playing, quickly repeat the form that the error occurred in again from the beginning finger position without losing momentum, don’t miss a beat.

If you feel expert enough to, then increase your speed, you should be able to play this forward and in reverse without error and with your eyes closed.
